ASTON MARTIN RED BULL RACING RB16 – MAX VERSTAPPEN – WINNER 70TH ANNIVERSARY GP 2020
Styrian Grand Prix, Tuscan Grand Prix, 70th anniversary Grand Prix? What are these strange names? During the pandemic season, the calendar of races had to be rearranged and sometimes a circuit or a country hosted several Grand Prixs. This was the case at Silverstone, where two races were held in succession. The British Grand Prix and the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, the latter to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Formula One.
As the 2020 season got underway, it soon became clear that with Ferrari in decline, there was only one man who could keep the Mercedes team at bay, and that was Max Verstappen. The Dutchman, still only 23, started well in the RB16, but after four grand prix he was still without a race win. Although he came relatively close at the British Grand Prix, Hamilton sledged to the finish three wheels ahead of him, but the rematch was a week away, and this time the Red Bull were not favourites. The qualifying session did not go according to plan, with Verstappen not only failing to beat the Mercedes, but even qualifying ahead of the substitute Nico Hülkenberg. In the race, Verstappen then took revenge at the start to move up to third place. The Dutchman was on a different rubber strategy, which worked this time. The Mercedes, running on a softer compound, could not pull away from the #33 Red Bull, and a pit lane and tactical battle ensued, with the Red Bull emerging victorious and Verstappen taking his first win of the season.
For Verstappen, it was the ninth race win of his career and his 35th podium finish. Minichamps commemorates this superbly orchestrated triumph with this 1:43 scale model car.
